How To Build A Probe File

Posted by Tony Tillett on Aug 15, 2017 11:17:24 AM

The first step in CMM programming is to define which probes you will be using during the inspection process.

PC-DMIS supports a wide variety of probe types and calibration tools. A new part program must have a probe file created or selected before any measurements can be taken. To access the probe options select “Insert” from the menu bar and then select “Hardware definition” and then probe from the drop down menu.

This will bring up the probe utilities dialog box which displays the probe data for the active tip, this allows you to create new probe files as needed. Probes can also be calibrated using this option.

Using Formfeed For Report Printouts

Posted by Tony Tillett on Aug 15, 2017 11:16:49 AM

Often when producing Dimensional Measurement Reports to the printer, there is a continuity problem such that Textual Report Comments become disjointed from the dimension as they appear on 2 separate pages. This can make the report look unprofessional and lazily done. For example:

Example 1: Printer Comment appears on Page 1 and the Dimensional report associated with the Comment appears on Page 2. To overcome this problem the user can choose to use the ‘Formfeed’ command.

The [Formfeed] command can be found in the ‘Insert’ tab in the top menu. First choose the [Report Command] and then select the [Formfeed] option.

This is an example of the Formfeed command in the program

The result of the Formfeed option ‘tidies’ up the presentation of Reports.

TR_FG018 Error Code – The Common Cause And Future Prevention

Posted by Tony Tillett on Aug 2, 2017 10:00:10 AM

One that’s coming up a little more regularly here at Status Metrology HQ is the concerned call from a CMM Operator who’s machine isn’t performing and reporting a TR_FG018 error code. As machine environments, build quality and reliably all improve, it is human nature to expect the CMM to always be on point. However, TP20’s wear as they are swapped on and off the CMM however many times a day, week, month or year. Often as not when the touch probe isn’t seated properly or the contact surfaces are worn you’ll receive a TR_FG018 error code. Thankfully it is usually very easy to remedy, simply swap that touch probe off the CMM or re-seat the probe and ‘hey presto’ it should resolve the problem.
