Having worked with state of the art measuring machines for the last 30 years, on 18th May, we unveiled a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) at Shrewsbury College that will be used to train the next generation of British metrologists. This CMM machine is a part of a £250,000+ investment in the engineering lab at Shrewsbury, which includes machinery, training equipment, apps and curriculum support.
As engineering moves toward ever higher standards of production, CMM-based metrology will only grow in importance. If the UK is going to compete effectively in the 21st century global marketplace, private industry will have to work hand-in-hand with colleges and universities to ready the workforce for further progress. A group of industry-leading measurement professionals attended the unveiling, and spent their day helping the students get acquainted with the new CMM machine.
A Changing Industry
As production standards rise, industry will need more qualified metrologists to ensure that quality control can keep up with the demands that manufacturing requires. Shrewsbury College is a national leader when it comes to getting students ready to enter the engineering professions. Our partnership with the college will enrich the knowledge base available to staff and pupils, equipping young engineers for a diverse range of careers in the sector.
An expansion in demand for highly skilled staff by UK firms currently goes hand in hand with a skills shortage among engineering graduates. Alongside Status and other sponsors, the Engineering Faculty at Shrewsbury Collage has worked diligently to address this shortfall. State of the art training facilities at colleges and universities will ensure the UK manufacturing sector has well trained engineers, equipped for the challenges of the modern industry. We are proud to be part of this renewal and to support the staff and students at Shrewsbury make a real impact on the sector in the years to come.
Using and maintaining a CMM machine effectively requires a great deal of theoretical knowledge and practical application. At Status Metrology we are pleased to pass on our knowledge and skills to the next generation of professionals in the UK. We provide a full range of CMM services, including equipment sales and rentals, outsourced inspection, training and CMM machine maintenance.
